What's my story? How did you start working with Destino?
I
grew up in New Mexico. When I was 10 years old I asked Jesus to forgive my
sins while sitting around a campfire. A friends dad shared how we
all make mistakes and need Jesus to forgive the penalty of our
sins. Nobody had to tell me about my sin, I knew I had done wrong
things and had bad thoughts.
The man had us write down our sins privately on a piece of paper and I was concerned someone would see what I was writing so
held the paper very close. He said if you have asked Christ to
forgive your sins
then throw your paper into the fire. As the fire burns the paper
away so Christ takes away the penalty of your sins. I can still
remember feeling like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
While attending New Mexico State University I got involved with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) and grew significantly in my spiritual life. God really used a friendship with Alex Garcia who was one of the CCC Staff who challenged me to grow spiritually. We would study the Bible together and share our faith on campus. I also spent one summer in Mexico City on a summer mission project with Alex and developing my Spanish and spiritual walk.
After completing a degree in civil/ environmental engineering at NMSU
I took a job in Virginia and worked for 6 years. In my job I
worked
with people from different ethnic backgrounds and I learned
many things while interacting within different communities. During
4 of these years I took my vacation in Mexico joining
Alex in ministry at different universities.
It was a great time of ministry and meeting others working with Alex. Back in Virginia I served in my church leading youth groups, playing the guitar and developing in ministry.
In January 1997 I joined CCC to work full-time with Alex to reach Hispanics for Christ. I joined a team of 6 in El Paso, Texas where our scope was to expose the 60,000 students to Christ in El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. I shared about my personal relationship with Christ at the local community colleges, and university. We held annual leadership conferences, created new materials, developed a website, and grew in ministry skills.
In
2000 I joined a special group in Orlando for leadership training. I currently work with the Destino Coaching Center which
is a team that helps Hispanic students develop in leadership, deepen
their spiritual life, and reach out to other Latinos with the story of
Christ.
God has been so good to me and I am blessed to be able to invest my time mentoring students.
Respectfully,
